A 15th century castle tower in Thurles Co. Tipperary

Description

Black and white image of the rear of Black Castle or Thurles Castle. A 15th century tower house built by the Butler family around 1453 to replace the 12th century motte (now gone) about 30 meters North of the tower. It was originally surrounded by a stone wall with towers and a gateway and possibly had a 17th century house attached but the castle was ruined by parliamentary forces in the civil war (1641-53).
