Black and white image of Athassel Abbey ruins. Co Tipperary. Athassel was built for the Augustianians in the 12th century by William De Burgo and is the largest medieval priory in Ireland. The Abbey was burnt twice and the town that had grown up around it was destroyed in those raids. It was dissolved in 1537 and the lands passed into the hands of the Butlers. 3 October 1924
