Subject
National school records from Ardfinnan NS
Description
A collection of records from Ardfinnan NS. Many of the records are in very poor condition and only partially legible.
The National School at Ardfinnan was established in 1850 and a new school was built in 1856 on the present site. A new school was built in the Commons, Ardfinnan, in 1856 on the present site. though inspectors reports from the 1880s suggests the building was in a poor condition, a new building was finally completed in 1910.
The Curriculum in the latter half of the 19th Century was varied , even between the Boy's and Girl's schools! The boys had lessons in Arithmetic, Penmanship, Grammar, Dictation, Geography and Agriculture. Religion also was an important subject. At the turn of the century Elementary Science was introduced as well as Book-keeping and Physical Drill (P.E.). Algebra, Geometry and Irish were subjects taught as optional extras after school on certain days.
In the Girl's School the basics were much the same until the pupils reached 5th Class. From then on a strong emphasis was put on what was termed ‘Industrial Instruction'. Subjects such as Sewing, Domestic Economy, Cookery, Laundry, Dressmaking, Knitting and even Poultry-keeping were taught.
The records include a girls register for 1902-1920, examination rolls and inspectors reports as well as other 19th century correspondence. The register gives a record of the school history of pupils and contains an index which lists the names, register number and page in register and the register entry for each pupil giving date of entrance, registration number , full name, date of birth, religious denomination, address, parent’s occupation previous school and last class in that schoolclass. The register also lists the name, roll number and address of the school
