Originally built in the 13/14th century by the Cistercians of St. Mary's in Dublin. when the Abbey was dissolved the castle was granted to John Travers. During the Cromwellian period it was granted to General Ludlow. Originally a very large castle all that remains is the original gatehouse and a three storey tower which had been part of the larger building. 12 December 1919
